Don’t Miss the Deadline: Your Final Guide to Skills Equity Compliance

The clock is ticking for South African employers. As we enter March 2026, the window for mandatory skills development reporting is rapidly closing. For many businesses, the next few weeks will determine whether they reclaim a portion of their levies or forfeit them entirely.

At SDC Consult, we know that Workplace Skills Plan (WSP) and Annual Training Report (ATR) submissions are often viewed as “compliance headaches.” However, when managed strategically, they are powerful tools for business growth and total guidance.

The Critical Deadline: 30 April 2026

While March is your time for final preparation, the ultimate deadline is 30 April 2026.

Important Notice: Most SETAs have explicitly stated that no extensions will be granted for late or incomplete submissions. Waiting until the last week of April risks technical glitches and missed opportunities for mandatory and discretionary grant applications.

1. What Are You Submitting?

To stay compliant, you must submit two distinct but linked documents to your relevant SETA:

  • Workplace Skills Plan (WSP): A forward-looking document outlining the planned training and upskilling initiatives your organisation intends to implement.
  • Annual Training Report (ATR): A backward-looking report detailing the actual training that took place during the previous period.

2. Why Your Submission Matters

Filing your WSP/ATR is not just about staying on the right side of the law; it has direct financial and strategic benefits:

Recovering Your Mandatory Grant

By submitting a compliant WSP/ATR, employers can apply for mandatory and discretionary grants with professional support. This is essentially reinvesting in your staff at a lower cost to the company.

Access to Unlimited Training

When you partner with SDC Consult for these submissions, you can benefit from training courses on three training platforms with unlimited access at no additional cost. This includes essential courses such as First Aid Level 1Basic Fire Fighting, and OHS.

3. Your March Checklist: Don’t Get Caught Off Guard

Use this month to gather the following evidence to ensure a smooth upload:

  • Accurate Employee Data: A current list of all employees to ensure compliance with the Employment Equity Act.
  • Training Evidence: Proof of all training completed, including certificates and attendance registers.
  • Employment Equity Plans: Ensure your training aligns with your current employment equity plans and report submissions.
  • Safety Compliance: Verify that your SHEQ compliance and HSE training are up to date as part of your strategic planning.
